#watch

I’ve wanted a Sinn #watch for a long time. They’re maybe the most-legit tool watch brand, focused on innovative materials and cases, useful complications, and incredible value. I decided to pull the trigger yesterday on an incredible diving chrono that ticks all the boxes for me! More next week!

Today's #watch just came in the post, actually. It's a generous gift from someone who prefers to remain anonymous. The watch is made by a relatively new Australian microbrand called HZ. The watch is the HZ.01, the first model they produced. Titanium case, sapphire glass, Swiss quartz movement. More photos and specs on their site. It's a lot of bang for the buck and I absolutely love its Art Déco-inspired look. hzwatches.com/

I made some tiny tweaks to my Cistercian numerals watch face. The date and step count numerals are now just a little bit bolder, and there's finally a way to see the remaining battery power on screen: that thin black border around the edge will gradually shrink into the corners as it drains.

I finally thought to take a photo towards the end of the day when the time numeral is fairly complex!

My Cistercian watch face is basically finished! I've added numerals for date and step count, and tweaked the style of the diagonal lines (though I may tinker with that further). The one thing left is to add some way of displaying remaining battery life, but that'll likely be a bar rather than a numeral. Amusingly, this is two years to the day since my previous attempt at this project: damonwakes.itch.io/hibernation

I've improved my Cistercian watch face. I found the first version a little hard to read at an angle because of the chunky frame of the Watchy's aluminium case, so I've reduced the overall size of the numeral and beefed up the thickness of the lines. One downside is that the diagonal lines (not shown) are now a little too chunky, but that's okay because the style should be much easier to adjust in future.

A while back, I made a Bitsy Jam game about trying and not quite managing to make a watch that displays the time in Cistercian numerals: damonwakes.itch.io/hibernation

Almost two years on, I'm happy to say that I've finally done it! I'd still like to add a battery indicator (and if I'm feeling really fancy, numerals for the date and a step counter), but I'm quite happy with the minimalist look of this as-is.

What an excellent #docuseries The Space Shuttle That Fell to Earth is. Made by the #BBC it documents the 2003 - Columbia space shuttle as it breaks up in the sky over Texas, killing all on board. NASA, loved ones and investigators share how an incredible journey ended in tragedy.

It's a 3-part series and it's a tale of aspiration, ambition and a mindset of management that perilously refuses to recognise warnings!

#Watch on #ABC iview in #Australia or the BBC if you're in the UK.

Wrapping up this thread. Finally got through to a human (or convincing human sounding AI) at #timex and they suggested a straight return and refund, so I've sent it back.

I wrote a one star review on the watch page, along with a photo of the broken watch, but they've conveniently deleted it. That'll explain why there are only 4 and 5 star reviews.

So, I'm back in the market for a nice field #watch Must have sapphire glass, would consider solar or a fancy automatic. Any ideas?

"I posted a very long and detailed article about the early history of the balance spring cartel in Switzerland. I spent 6 months researching this (in old French newspapers, academic papers, and business records!) and thought it was pretty interesting.
